Armenia and Azerbaijan Mark Peace Anniversary with Growing Economic Cooperation

Marking one year since their historic peace summit, Armenia and Azerbaijan report expanding economic ties, highlighted by direct Azerbaijani petroleum exports to Armenia and restored cross-border transit trade.
Diplomatic Communications and Summit Anniversary
On August 8, 2026, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan called President Ilham Aliyev to exchange views on the first anniversary of the Washington Peace Summit [1]. This summit, held on August 8, 2025, was supported by U.S. President Donald Trump and established peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia [1]. During the conversation, the sides noted the progress achieved over the past 1 year in the normalization of relations [1]. The leaders also discussed the initialling of the text of the Peace Agreement between the two republics [1].
Economic Cooperation and Transit Corridors
The conversation highlighted the development of trade and economic ties as a tangible manifestation of the benefits of peace [1]. Specifically, the sides noted the export of Azerbaijani petroleum products to Armenia [1]. Transportation of transit cargo through the territory of Azerbaijan to Armenia and from Armenia to other destinations was also discussed [1]. Vienna Meeting and Regional Stability
Prior to the call, the two leaders held a two-hour formal meeting in Vienna on Friday, August 7, 2026 [2].
