Make-A-Wish International Launches in Tanzania to Grant Dreams of Critically Ill Children

Tanzania, Monday, 17 February 2025.
Make-A-Wish International partners with Tumaini La Maisha to extend its life-changing services to Tanzania. The program, launched on 16 February 2025, supports children with critical illnesses.
Historic Launch in East Africa
In a significant milestone for both organizations, Make-A-Wish International officially commenced operations in Tanzania on February 16, 2025, marking its first presence in Africa [1]. The launch event, held at the Sea Cliff Hotel in Dar es Salaam, coincided with International Childhood Cancer Day, highlighting the organization’s commitment to supporting children facing critical illnesses [1]. Through this strategic partnership with Tumaini La Maisha (TLM), a local charity organization, Make-A-Wish Tanzania aims to bring hope and joy to thousands of children battling serious medical conditions [1][3].
Meeting Critical Needs
The expansion comes at a crucial time, as Tanzania faces significant challenges in pediatric healthcare. TLM currently provides treatment to approximately 1,000 children with cancer annually, while an estimated 4,500 children in the country are affected by cancer [1]. The collaboration will operate primarily through Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, focusing on children aged 3 to 17 who are battling critical illnesses [1]. Research supports the impact of such initiatives, with 98% of wish families reporting the experience as important for children with critical illnesses [1].
First Wish Granted
The program has already made its first dream come true. Eleven-year-old Kuyela, who is battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia, became the first recipient of a wish in Tanzania, receiving his desired Simba SC jersey [1]. This inaugural wish exemplifies the organization’s mission to create life-changing experiences for children facing serious medical challenges. Looking ahead, Make-A-Wish Tanzania has ambitious plans, with expectations to serve over 100 children in its first year of operation [3].
Future Impact and Growth
Luciano Manzo, President & CEO of Make-A-Wish International, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, ‘We are thrilled to welcome Make-A-Wish Tanzania as the first member of our network in Africa’ [1]. With Make-A-Wish’s track record of granting over 585,000 wishes worldwide across nearly 50 countries and territories [1], this expansion represents a significant step toward the organization’s goal of reaching every eligible child. The program plans to expand its reach to additional regions within Tanzania by the end of 2025 [3], further strengthening its impact on children’s lives throughout the country.
